John

I traded for four years and never made a single withdrawal. I kept losing money, again and again. The one-on-one classes at Chess Traders gave me the chance to face my weak points and fix them. I am grateful.

James

I started forex just a few months before I found Chess Traders, and I am glad I did. I am becoming more consistent in my trading, and my risk management is very good now. The system is built to shape you into that kind of trader. I would love to work even more with Chess Traders.

Emmanuel

I am very grateful for Chess Traders, especially the one-on-one training. I have been in other communities on Telegram and Discord. This place is different. Here I got the right training and education.

Kingsley

I believe I have been given the blueprint to really succeed in trading. The tools that came with the program, after I completed all the levels, made a big difference.

George

I am really glad for the training. I still remember what our lead trader said his own coach told him: learn from your losses, but never get comfortable with them. I thank our lead trader for his help.

Matthew

I traded for three years with no real results. After I joined this program, I made my first withdrawal. It was a big milestone for me, and I have been consistent since.

How Forex Works
The global currency market, who's in it, and why it matters.

The World's Largest Financial Market

Forex stands for Foreign Exchange. It is the global marketplace where currencies are bought and sold against each other. Every day, over $7.5 trillion changes hands — making it the largest, most liquid financial market on the planet.

When you travel abroad and convert your money at a currency exchange, you are participating in forex. The difference is that traders do this intentionally, trying to profit from the fact that exchange rates constantly move up and down.

How the Forex Market Works
FOREX MARKET CENTRAL BANKS COMM. BANKS HEDGE FUNDS CORPO- RATIONS RETAIL TRADERS FOREX BROKERS INVEST. BANKS ▲ YOU ARE HERE
All these participants trade with each other through a decentralised global network — the forex market never closes Monday–Friday.
Key Fact

Currencies are always traded in pairs — you buy one by selling another. Example: EUR/USD means you are buying Euros and selling US Dollars (or vice versa). You are always betting on one currency strengthening against the other.

When is the market open? Forex trades 24 hours a day, 5 days a week — from Sunday evening to Friday evening. It runs across four global sessions: Sydney → Tokyo → London → New York. The biggest price moves happen during the London session and the London/New York overlap (roughly 8am–12pm EST).

Finding Your Trading Style

Not all traders work the same way. Your style is determined by how long you hold trades, how much time you can dedicate per day, and your personality. There are four main types of traders — and each uses a different timeframe and approach.

Trader Types — Hold Time Comparison
SCALPER DAY TRADER SWING TRADER POSITION TRADER Seconds Minutes Hours Days Weeks Months+ SCALPER Holds: seconds–minutes Charts: M1, M5 Screen time: HIGH Many small trades/day DAY TRADER Holds: minutes–hours Charts: M15, H1 Screen time: MEDIUM-HIGH No overnight positions SWING TRADER Holds: days–weeks Charts: H4, D1 Screen time: LOW-MEDIUM Catches multi-day moves POSITION TRADER Holds: weeks–months Charts: W1, MN Screen time: LOW Macro / trend-based
The longer you hold, the less screen time you need — but the larger your stop losses need to be to absorb normal market swings.
  • Scalper: Executes dozens of trades per day, holding each for seconds to a few minutes. Requires full focus and fast execution. Best for people who love fast-paced action and can be at their screens consistently.
  • Day Trader: Opens and closes all trades within the same day. Never holds positions overnight. A popular choice because it balances activity with manageable screen time.
  • Swing Trader: Holds trades for days to weeks, capturing larger price "swings." Works well for people with a full-time job who can analyse charts in the evening and let trades run.
  • Position Trader: Holds for weeks to months based on fundamental macro trends. Least active style — more like investing than trading.
For Beginners

Most trading coaches — including ours — recommend starting as a swing trader or day trader. These styles give you enough time to think through your decisions without the extreme speed pressure of scalping, while still being active enough to build skill and experience quickly.

What You Need to Start Trading

Getting started in forex doesn't require a lot of equipment. But it does require the right foundations. Here's what every beginner needs before placing a single trade.

The 5 Things You Need to Start
DEVICE PC, laptop or phone INTERNET Reliable connection BROKER Your market gateway PLATFORM Chart & trade software EDUCATION Strategy & risk skills
You don't need much — but you do need to understand each step before putting real money at risk.

What is a Broker? A forex broker is a company that acts as the middleman between you and the currency market. Because the forex market is a global, decentralised network of banks and institutions, individual traders cannot access it directly. A broker provides you with:

  • Access to trade currency pairs
  • A trading platform (software) to view charts and place orders
  • Leverage — the ability to trade larger positions than your deposit
  • Execution of your buy and sell orders in the market
Important

We do not recommend or endorse any specific broker. Do your own research, ensure any broker you use is regulated by a recognised financial authority in your country, and always start on a demo account before risking real money.

What is a Trading Platform? The trading platform is the software your broker provides — or that you download separately — to view live price charts and place trades. The most widely used platform in retail forex is MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and its successor MetaTrader 5 (MT5). Many traders also use browser-based charting tools to do their analysis.

Demo Account vs Live Account: A demo account lets you trade with virtual (fake) money in real market conditions. It's the ideal way to practise without financial risk. Every beginner should spend meaningful time on a demo account before ever depositing real money. A live account uses real funds — and carries real risk.

Fundamental vs Technical Analysis
Two ways to read the market — and why most traders use both.
Free ▼
How Traders Decide What to Trade and When

There are two main schools of thought on how to analyse the market and find trading opportunities. Understanding both is essential — even if you ultimately specialise in one.

Fundamental vs Technical Analysis
FUNDAMENTAL ANALYSIS "WHY will price move?" → Interest rate decisions → Inflation & employment data → GDP & economic growth reports → Central bank speeches & policy → Geopolitical events & news MACRO / BIG PICTURE TECHNICAL ANALYSIS "WHEN & WHERE will price move?" → Price charts & candlestick patterns → Support & resistance levels → Trend lines & market structure → Technical indicators (RSI, MACD…) → Entry, stop loss & target levels CHART-BASED / TIMING VS
Fundamentals explain the "why" behind big market moves. Technicals help you find the precise "when and where" to enter and exit.

Fundamental Analysis looks at the economic and political forces that drive currency values. If a country's economy is strong — growing GDP, rising employment, higher interest rates — its currency tends to strengthen. Major fundamental events like central bank interest rate decisions can move a currency pair by hundreds of pips in minutes.

Technical Analysis ignores the "why" and focuses entirely on the price chart. The core belief is that all known information is already reflected in the price, and that price tends to repeat certain patterns over time. Technical traders use charts, levels, and tools to find high-probability trade setups.

How Most Professional Traders Use Both

Use fundamentals to understand the overall direction and bias (e.g. "the USD is likely to strengthen this month because of rising interest rates"). Use technicals to find the precise entry point, set your stop loss, and choose your target. This combination — macro context + technical precision — is the foundation of professional trading.

Reading the Language of Price

A price chart is a visual record of how a currency pair's price has moved over time. Every trade decision a technical trader makes starts with the chart. There are three main chart types you will encounter.

The 3 Main Chart Types
LINE CHART LINE CHART Shows close prices only Simple overview of trend Used for quick trend spotting BAR CHART (OHLC) BAR (OHLC) CHART Shows Open, High, Low, Close More detail than line Less popular with retail traders CANDLESTICK CHART ★ CANDLESTICK CHART Shows OHLC + visual patterns Most widely used by traders ★ The professional standard
Purple = bullish candles (price went up). White = bearish candles (price went down). This is the brand colour scheme you'll see throughout the Academy.
  • Line Chart: Connects only the closing prices with a single line. Simple and clean — useful for getting a quick view of the overall trend, but it hides important information about the price action within each period.
  • Bar Chart (OHLC): Shows the Open, High, Low, and Close for each period using a vertical bar with small horizontal ticks. Contains more information than a line chart but is less visually intuitive than candlesticks.
  • Candlestick Chart: The dominant choice of professional retail traders worldwide. Shows the same OHLC data as the bar chart but in a far more readable visual format that also reveals patterns at a glance. This is what you'll learn to read in depth in the next module.
The Standard

The candlestick chart is the professional standard. Nearly every trader, trading educator, and charting platform defaults to candlesticks. Everything from this point forward in this course uses candlestick charts.

Candlestick Charts in Depth
Bull candles, bear candles, anatomy, and key patterns every trader must know.

How to Read a Candlestick

A candlestick is a single unit of price information. It tells you four things about what price did in a given time period: where it opened, where it closed, the highest it reached, and the lowest it fell. Together, these four pieces of data paint a picture of who was in control — buyers or sellers.

Anatomy of a Candlestick — Bull vs Bear
HIGH Highest point reached CLOSE Closing price (top of body) BODY OPEN Opening price (base of body) LOW Lowest point reached BULL CANDLE HIGH Highest point reached OPEN Opening price (top of body) BODY CLOSE Closing price (base of body) LOW Lowest point reached BEAR CANDLE
Bull candles are purple (our brand colour). Bear candles are white/light. Close > Open = bull. Open > Close = bear.

Why "Bull" and "Bear"? A bull candle (also called bullish or up candle) means price closed higher than it opened — buyers were in control. The term "bull" comes from the way a bull attacks — thrusting upward. A bear candle means price closed lower than it opened — sellers dominated. "Bear" comes from a bear swiping downward with its claws.

Common Candlestick Patterns to Know
DOJI Indecision Open ≈ Close Market undecided HAMMER Bullish Reversal Long lower wick Buyers pushed back SHOOTING STAR Bearish Reversal Long upper wick Sellers rejected price BULLISH ENGULFING Strong Bullish Signal Bull body covers previous bear body BEARISH ENGULFING Strong Bearish Signal Bear body covers previous bull body PIN BAR Rejection Signal Long wick shows strong rejection Bullish (Purple = buyers in control) Bearish (White = sellers in control) Neutral (Doji)
These 6 patterns appear on every chart, every day. Learning to spot them at key support and resistance levels is one of the first skills you'll build.
Why Candlestick Patterns Matter

Candlestick patterns reveal the battle between buyers and sellers. A single candle or a sequence of two or three candles can signal that the market is about to change direction or continue its current move. This is why professional traders study them deeply — not as magic signals, but as visual evidence of market sentiment.

Key Trading Terms
Pips, lots, leverage, spread, margin — the vocabulary every trader must know.
Free ▼
The Language of Forex — Master the Vocabulary

Forex has its own vocabulary. You will hear these terms every single day — in analysis, in trade discussions, and when reading about the market. Learn them now so nothing catches you off guard.

What is a Pip? — Visual Explanation
EUR/USD 1.105 0 → 1.105 5 4th decimal +5 pips A pip is the 4th decimal place. Moving from 1.1050 to 1.1055 = a move of 5 pips.
For JPY pairs (e.g. USD/JPY), a pip is the 2nd decimal place — e.g. 145.00 → 145.05 = 5 pips.
Lot Sizes Comparison
STANDARD LOT 100,000 units of base currency ~$10 per pip MINI LOT 10,000 units of base currency ~$1 per pip MICRO LOT 1,000 units of base currency ~$0.10 per pip NANO LOT 100 units of base currency ~$0.01 per pip
Beginners should start with micro lots. This keeps your pip value small while you build skill and confidence on a live account.

Leverage lets you control a larger position with a smaller deposit. A broker offering 100:1 leverage means you can control $100,000 in currency with just $1,000 in your account. While leverage amplifies potential profits, it equally amplifies losses. Use leverage conservatively — especially as a beginner.

Spread is the difference between the buy (ask) price and sell (bid) price. It's the broker's built-in cost per trade. Margin is the amount held as collateral to keep a leveraged trade open. Going Long = buying, expecting price to rise. Going Short = selling, expecting price to fall.

Risk Management

Protecting Your Capital — The Most Important Skill in Trading

Most beginners focus on finding winning trades. Professionals focus on not losing their capital. This shift in mindset is what separates those who last from those who blow their accounts. Risk management is not optional — it is the foundation everything else is built on.

Stop Loss & Take Profit — How a Trade is Structured
1.1130 1.1120 1.1110 1.1100 1.1090 1.1080 1.1070 ENTRY 1.1100 TAKE PROFIT +20p STOP LOSS −10p +20 pips REWARD −10 pips RISK RRR = 1 : 2 ✓
This trade risks 10 pips to make 20 pips — a 1:2 risk-to-reward ratio. Even if you only win 40% of trades, you're profitable over time.
The 1–2% Rule

Never risk more than 1–2% of your total account balance on a single trade. On a $1,000 account, that means a maximum of $10–$20 at risk per trade. This ensures even 10 consecutive losses only costs you 10–20% of your account — and your trading career survives.

09
The Trader's Mindset
Fear, greed, discipline and the mindset that separates consistent traders.
Free ▼
The Mindset Edge — 80% of Trading is Mental

You can have the best strategy and the best risk management — and still lose consistently if your psychology isn't right. The market will provoke every emotion you have: fear, greed, impatience, overconfidence, and revenge. Your job is to trade your plan, not your emotions.

The Trader's Emotional Cycle — Most Beginners Go Through This
EXCITEMENT "I'm going to make it big!" OVERCONFIDENCE "I knew it. I'm a natural." FIRST LOSS "That was just bad luck." REVENGE TRADE "I'll win it back right now." BLOWN ACCOUNT HOW TO BREAK THE CYCLE: Written plan → Daily loss limit → Trading journal → Accept losses
Understanding this cycle is the first step to breaking out of it. Every professional trader has been through it — most more than once.
  • Fear causes traders to exit winning trades too early or miss valid setups entirely after a losing streak. The antidote: a written plan you follow regardless of how you feel.
  • Greed pushes traders to over-leverage, move take profit targets further, or enter setups that don't qualify. It ignores risk management and destroys accounts fast.
  • Revenge Trading — the urge to win back a loss immediately — is one of the most destructive forces in trading. After a loss, the correct response is to close the platform and return with a clear head.
  • Patience is a skill. The best traders spend more time watching than trading. They wait for setups that are undeniably valid — not ones they have to convince themselves about.
Chess Traders Rule

"If you're asking yourself whether this is a valid setup — it isn't. Wait for the trades that are obvious."

The Two Key Activities: Buying & Selling
As a trader, everything you do comes down to one decision — Buy or Sell. Here's how to make it correctly.
Free ▼
Your Entire Job as a Trader is Two Things

Strip away all the complexity — the indicators, the patterns, the news events — and what does a forex trader actually do? They make one decision: Buy or Sell. That's it. Every session you sit at your screen, every trade you place, every strategy you build — it all comes down to answering that single question at the right moment.

But here is what separates a professional trader from a gambler: a professional never clicks Buy or Sell randomly. They wait. They analyse. They look for confluences — signals from technical analysis, price structure, market context, and sometimes fundamental drivers — that all point in the same direction. Only when those confluences align do they act.

The Trader's Core Decision
ANALYSIS & CONFLUENCES Technical + Fundamental + Structure BUY Price expected to RISE SELL Price expected to FALL Both directions can be profitable — the skill is knowing WHEN.
You don't need the price to go up to make money. You can profit whether the market rises or falls — as long as you're on the right side.
Critical Point

Unlike stocks, forex lets you profit in both directions. You buy when you believe the base currency will strengthen. You sell (go short) when you believe it will weaken. The market goes up and it goes down — your job is to identify which, then wait for confirmation.

What a Real Buy Trade Looks Like

A buy trade (also called going "long") means you are entering the market expecting the price to move upward. You open the trade at a lower price, and if your analysis is correct, the price rises — and you close it at a higher price for a profit. Your Stop Loss sits below your entry (limiting your risk if you're wrong), and your Take Profit sits above (locking in your reward when you're right).

Example: Successful BUY Trade — EUR/USD
Price Time → ▶ ENTRY 1.0820 ✓ TAKE PROFIT 1.0940 (+120 pips) ✗ STOP LOSS 1.0790 (−30 pips) RISK : REWARD 1 : 4 Risk 30 pips → Win 120 pips Even 1 win out of 3 = profit
The trade was entered after confluences confirmed bullish momentum. Stop Loss protected downside. Take Profit was hit for a 4R gain — meaning 4× the amount risked.
What a Real Sell Trade Looks Like

A sell trade (also called going "short") means you enter expecting the price to move downward. You open at a higher price — and if correct, the price falls and you close at a lower price for a profit. Your Stop Loss sits above your entry, your Take Profit sits below.

This is one of the biggest advantages of forex over many other markets — you can profit just as easily when prices fall as when they rise. A bear market is not a problem for a forex trader. It is an opportunity.

Example: Successful SELL Trade — GBP/USD
Price Time → ✗ STOP LOSS 1.2750 (−25 pips) ▶ ENTRY 1.2725 ✓ TAKE PROFIT 1.2625 (+100 pips) RISK : REWARD 1 : 4 Risk 25 pips → Win 100 pips Even 1 win out of 3 = profit
Price rejected a key resistance level. Confluences confirmed bearish pressure. The sell was entered, Stop Loss placed above the rejection wick, Take Profit hit for a 4R gain.
The Winning Formula

Your wins don't need to outnumber your losses — they just need to be bigger. If you risk 1% on every trade and aim for a 1:3 risk-to-reward ratio, you only need to be right 4 times out of 10 to be profitable. This is why professional traders focus on quality of decisions, not the number of trades.

The Professional Trader's Process — Every. Single. Trade.
ANALYSE Structure + Context WAIT FOR Confluence Signal CONFIRM Entry Trigger SET SL / TP Define Risk First BUY or SELL Execute with confidence STEP 1 STEP 2 STEP 3 STEP 4 STEP 5
Clicking Buy or Sell is the last step — not the first. Everything before it is what makes the difference between trading and gambling.
  • Buying (Going Long) — You believe the base currency will strengthen. Price goes up, you profit. Price goes against you, your Stop Loss closes the trade with a controlled loss.
  • Selling (Going Short) — You believe the base currency will weaken. Price falls, you profit. You can short any pair on MT4/MT5 with the same ease as buying — it is a one-click action.
  • Analysis decides direction — Technical analysis (price action, structure, patterns), fundamental analysis (news, interest rates, economic data), and confluence (multiple signals agreeing) tell you which way to lean.
  • Patience is the strategy — Most of a professional trader's time is spent watching and waiting. Not every hour has a valid setup. Forcing trades is how accounts get blown.
  • Wins > Losses by size, not count — With a disciplined risk-to-reward approach, you can be wrong more often than you're right and still build a growing account.
Our Perspective

"When I sit down to trade, I am not trying to find action. I am trying to find one or two moments where everything lines up — structure, momentum, and timing — and then I act with full conviction. That patience is the strategy. The buy or the sell is just the result of it."
